This assignment has two main goals:
- Develop the skill of “active reading”—that is, to slow down, to reflect upon what you have read, and to respond to the text in your own words. This will greatly increase your reading fluency, with the added bonus of helping you to retain more of what you read and preparing you for class discussion.
- Share your ideas, questions and reflections on the texts we read with the rest of the class.
Each entry should be about 250/300 words, and should contain the following information:
- The author, title, and date of the text(s) you are discussing.
- Your own reflections on the text. Some things to think about: what does the text tell us about food and culture in the time period in which was written? What questions do you have about this text? Try to come up with 2-3 preliminary questions for class discussion.
- Also include a list of new words, phrases, and or grammatical constructions you encountered while reading the text, along with definitions.
You must publish your diario entries for the texts assigned BEFORE 5:00 pm on the day preceding the class discussion. Each week one different student in your group will take on the role of group leader. S/he will be responsible for releasing all the diari of the group on WordPress shortly after 5:00 pm, reading them and summarizing the main points, questions and ideas on our Lino board. This wil offer us a great start for our in-class discussion. If you have never used WordPress and/or Lino before, don't worry. We will have an in-class workshop, and after that you will be ready to make your contribution.
I will evaluate your diario mainly for content, completeness, and depth. In other words, it does not need to be perfectly organized or impeccably written. I want to see that you have read the texts carefully, and that you have thought about the issues the text presents.
