Shrike – Hozier

Genre: Indie Rock, Blues

Mood: I cried in the middle of a Dartmouth dining area when this EP got released

^true story.

I love Hozier. I have been waiting for music by him since his first EP came out. I love his style. I love his voice. I love him.

In this song, Hozier is comparing himself to a bird as he calls out to a loved one that he has lost. He made a mistake, and he is trying to get this person back:

“And I couldn’t whisper when you needed it shouted
Ah, but I’m singing like a bird, ’bout it now”

The lyrics of the song are genius.

Musically, I appreciate that during the verses, he sings in his chest voice. During these verses, he explains that he messed up and how he wished he could take it back. However, the chorus he sings higher and airy that he feels he is dead without her.

The contrast between the deep pain and the high ache just makes me cry a little.

He feels like she is a shrike bird, and he is the prey, getting killed on a thorn. He aches for her.

Kinda gross… sorry if I ruined the song. But it’s beautiful guys, just accept it.

Give the entire EP a listen. It is all great. But ya know me, I’m a sucker for a good song about a broken heart because we can all relate to that.
