Slavery & Emancipation in Latin America

This course discussed and examined the history of slavery up until and past its abolition in Latin America and the Caribbean. Topics like the differences between sugar and gold slavery were discussed, along with social death, life in the slave quarters, and the role of the indigenous. Post-abolition topics such as myths of racial harmony and colorism in Latin America were also discussed.

Writing in this class discussed the depictions of race and slavery in the movie Quilombo (found here) about the infamous Palmares fugitive slave society and Libertador, a biopic on Simón Bolívar (found here).
