Reflection on Past Writing

In the past, my writing was often superfluous and flowery. My development as a writer started in 11 AP English, when I started to analyze, synthesize and argue more details in my writing. I’ve noticed that I often have long, complicated thoughts that reflect upon the page as long, complicated sentences. I especially enjoy using the ; sign or using numerous compound sentences in one paragraph. Although I feel as though I have a lot to say and thus a duty to inform the reader, my writing sometimes comes off as unclear because I pack too much information into one thought. For my development, I should learn to break apart flowery description in place of impactful, simpler sentences. To further develop my writing, I believe it’s important to focus on the organization of the piece itself. Oftentimes, my ideas are not necessarily logically mapped out. Instead, I throw every detail into a big soup of ideas. In addition, when describing a certain noun or character, I often use too many adjectives for the subject and it becomes difficult to follow the sentence structure. To improve, I will create an outline map that follows ideas in a logical manner after I write my rough draft. In addition, I will try not to pick the biggest word in the dictionary. Instead, I will strive to pick succinct words that can relay my meaning in the least amount of words possible. I hope that in the future, my writing will be more clear and have more creativity in different sentence structures.
