Pre-Drafting Materials

There were four rounds of pre-drafting proposals in Project 2. The first three were written proposals, while the fourth was incorporated into an in class presentation.

Project 2 Initial Proposal

Professor Van Kley’s Commentary

Both 2 and 3 seem very likely viable to me (although I don’t really know that much about either of those cases yet). In each case, though, you’ll need to be sure you can gain access to a rich pool of information about the specific case. The first topic could also work, I think, but it’s going to be significantly more difficult to draw a compelling connection between that company and the localist debate. The company seems more interested, after all, in a nationalist rhetoric rather than a localist one.

Project 2 Revised Proposal

Professor Van Kley’s Commentary

A fascinating case! Looks very promising. A couple of questions for you: x) is the Shuman piece about this particular group already? If so, that will create some complexity for you. You’ll need to generate a new question and answer in order to ensure you’re doing more than merely re-stating what Shuman has said. Your goal here is to produce new knowledge about this case. So, I’ll ask you to keep thinking about how you can distinguish your research question from the questions that have already been answered for you. The questions you produce here seem valid, but Im not sure how much they depart from Shuman. The Kurland, Hill, and Mccaffrey piece looks very useful!
