Essay Question:

You are to assume the perspective of an individual in Pompeii (elite local, elite Roman, freed slave, foreigner, woman, slave, lower class, soldier; see sourcebooks) and write their own daily journal of life in Pompeii. You will need to document their day within the ancient monuments of the city, providing photos. This assignment can build upon what you have learned in Rome about Republican and Augustan Rome, or in Etruria, Lazio, or Campania about the various Italic peoples, and it can help you prepare for your role in the final Roman banquet. The paper should be 5 pages and must be topographically and historically dense, a “thick description” of ancient life.
