Day 25: Preserving the Patrimony

Coming at you from Naples, Italy on October 8, 2019

Bloggers: Halle and Margaret

Steps Taken: 12,401

Today we woke up at the crack of dawn to be at the Archeological Museum of Campi Flegri to see the Temple of Augustales. Unfortunately, we got stuck in an hour of traffic and our 1.5 hour trip turned into a two hour trip. Then we got to the museum and the signora told Professor Stewart that the site was closed. It was very hard to find the entrance to the museum, but at least we saw some beautiful views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Inside we saw looked at artifacts from the four different groups of people who lived in Ancient Naples and learned about underwater archaeology. We also learned about genius colonae, which is the physical embodiment of the spirit of the community and gives political identity.

Then we stopped for a quick lunch. After we looked around for food, we found a tiny sandwich shop. Halle found mold on her sandwich. Our praenotare to see another museum was canceled because of traffic. Clearly, we were having an excellent day.

To make perfect matters even better, Professor Stewart bought everyone ice cream. From there, our day only went uphill 🙂 we went to Cumae to see the Sibyll’s cave , where Aeneas definitely entered the underworld (6.42 to 72.) Benzi jumped out from behind a rock and scared the living dung out of Mack. This was just as dramatic as Aeneas’s descension into the underworld. Both things did happen! The cave gave everyone an Antiquity High which we carried with us throughout the day.

THEN, we walked down a Roman Road at the same sight towards a cluster of temples – we saw the temples of Apollo and Diana, along with an assortment of other very captivating rocks/dirt. We met two Irish pastors who described themselves as Pentacostal and Charismatic Christians. They made sure to point out where Paul wandered near the temples we were analyzing (praise the lord). The couple were also intrigued by and jealous of the Brothers and Sister Jew on our trip. Oh, the people you meet at archeology sites!!!!!

We’re very much looking forward to our free day tomorrow! Some of us journeying to Capri, and others are fasting for Yom Kippur. A fun day for everyone!

Cheers and Sneers,

H & M
