This morning, we got some much-needed sleep, and, after a morning of rest, went to the market at the Campo de Fiori to celebrate Mack‘s birthday. For lunch, we bought a lot of cheese, some pizza, and some tomatoes and figs. After a great birthday lunch at the Rome Center, we chatted with Professor Stewart about why we study Classics. For us, studying the Classics means stretching our brains in ways they wouldn’t be stretched while studying other things. When we study humanities, despite our Classics, Econ, Computer Science, or Neuroscience majors, studying the Classics forces us to study the mistakes of historical figures and learn from them.

Then, we had Italian class. After Italian, we had a meeting with Marcus Walker, who is a reporter from Rome for the Wall Street Journal, to discuss Brexit, social tendencies in the US, and how “fake news” is changing media. During our chat, we also had some nice cheese with peppercorns – Professor Stewart’s favorite. We had a very interesting talk, and really appreciate the time he spent with us! And of course he had to get in our selfie of the day:
