Day 13: All Roads (Eventually) Lead Back to Rome

Blogging from Rome, Italy on September 23, 2019!

We awoke this morning and quickly departed from the Hotel Narnia to the ruins of Ocriculum. We walked through an overgrown road past a small sheep farm selling ricotta. Behind this bucolic scene stood the massive remains of Ocriculum, an important Roman town on the Via Flamina prior to its sack and abandonment in the 7th century.

After pushing through a bramble-covered gate, we made our way to the jaw-dropping remains of a massive mausoleum. We also stared at the remains of the Via Flaminia, an important nexus of Roman trade and commerce, which once ran through the town.

From there we proceeded to view a massive superstructure. The superstructure would have supported an even larger building complex, although the bare remains of the building are massive.

After heading over to the amphitheatre, where the Romans would have held games, hunts, and other performances, we estimated the size of the town based on the amphitheatre seating.

After we finished exploring the ruins of Ocriculum, we returned to Rome and enjoyed a half day off exploring the city.

Ciao ragazzi!
