In many colleges and universities around the world, students not only have a classroom life, they also often have a work life too. Many college students have lives busy with classes and extracurricular activities and demanding real-world jobs as well. The balance between working too much while attending classes can become a dangerous threat to students. If in fact 14 million Americans work while taking classes, finding the time to share the workload of classes and a full or part time job is a daunting task, not to mention draining or tiring for a college or university student. However, there are certain campus spaces that can serve as potential remedies to this problem.

On campuses around the world, there are areas dedicated for the entertainment of its students. These places, known as third places, are designed to mediate between the student’s work and home life. They provide an area for amusement and interaction where its users are free to hang out and relax.  Designed to be student lounges, these spaces will contain features, such as couches or televisions, that attract people and encourage them to stay. In this case, 8 Ball Hall, modeled in the likeness of a game room or pool hall, advocates itself to be one of these third places while asserting a sense of community amongst the users of the space.
