It’s A Community

Since they centralized around community. spaces like 8 Ball Hall are greatly influenced by those who are present in the environment. Certain elements or features of the space rely on communal decisions which could people could potentially create conflict with other users of the space.

The blackboard and sound system are operated by a single user within the space but the choices made by an individual affects everyone in the environment. For example, someone may erase the drawing of another user in order to make room for their own or someone may change the currently playing song in favor of their own selection. These kind of decisions have a significant effect on the those who use the space and begs the question; what kind of identity do spaces like these seek?

While it may appear as an opportunity for conflict or competition between collective rights, the driving framework behind the physical space prevents that from occurring. In the case of 8 Ball Hall, a space orientated around community, it asserts respect among every user  through its public nature of the space.

On the right side of the room, are many couches and smaller coffee tables. The couches form a U shape, facing a two televisions in the center. Here, students will relax, gather together, and talk with each other. Often, groups of students will watch television, as this spot is extremely popular when major sport games are on, or will connect various video game systems and play with one another. 8 Ball Hall utilizes these particular items to emphasize the role of collectiveness and social interaction in the location. These elements distinguish the space as separated from the social environment of home and of workplace and instead emphasize the necessity of social engagement in order to create a successful feeling of community.

Along the entire right wall are a series of windows that expose the interior of the space to those lingering outside the walls. Although advocating to be inviting and appealing to those in Collis, 8 Ball Hall still has some social accountability for the users of the space. Although the room is for students and for them to use it as they please, they can be held responsible for their actions through this visibility. The publicity manifested through the windows make the actions and to some extent the conversations in the space available for scrutiny. Yet user even said “I like it how you san see inside and know whats going on before walking in” as one of their reasons for visiting the space. In order to be this community to be welcoming to all, the student lounge needs have some publicity to invite people while leaving it open for witnesses.

That being said, the responsibility that comes from the openness of the space perpetuates the idea of community amongst the users. Therefore, all potential discord is quelled by the users of the space acknowledging that they are accountable for all their actions.
