The Return of the Names, an annual commemoration of Stalin’s Great Terror victims, live stream today, October 29

October 29 (today) is the day for honoring the victims of Stalin’s repressions.

For the past 14 years, on this day, a 12-hour ceremony, called Return of the Names (Возвращение имён), is held at the memorial in Lubyanka Square, outside the headquarters of the current security service and its Stalin-era predecessors.

From morning to night, hundreds of people read aloud the names of those killed during the Stalin-era repressions mentioning their age, profession, and the date of execution.

Historians estimate that about one million people perished during Stalin’s Great Terror in the 1930s.

This year, due to the pandemic, the ceremony was moved online and can be watched live here from 10 am to 10 pm Moscow time (3 am to 3 pm ET).
