Belarusian Opposition Leader Tikhanovskaya to Meet With German Chancellor Angela Merkel

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya is set to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel amid continuing protests over the results of the country’s August’s presidential elections, dubbed unfair and unfree by the many in the international community. This meeting comes will arrive during a period of contention in the EU over a delay in sanctions against Belarus’ government and officials deemed to be complicit with violent crackdowns on peaceful protesters, possibly including President Lukashenko himself. Currently the sanctions are being blocked by Cyprus which has been complaining that the EU is not doing enough to punish Turkey over its activity in contested waters in the Mediterranean.
