Friendships, Discomfort, and Non-Negotiables

For a long time, I told myself that it was ok when close friends would belittle my choices and commitments. Oftentimes, these put-downs came in the form of jokes about how no one cares about my work. I didn’t really think twice about their behaviors because I’ve learned through my work that people are often flippant about mental health — it’s part of what it means to work with topics and concerns that are associated with significant societal stigmatization. Advice from Amateur Yogis

This winter I began doing yoga on a regular basis. It feels wrong to say that I “do yoga” though because that implies that I know what I’m doing. In reality, I’m very much still learning. For me, “doing yoga” means that I unroll my black yoga mat, play a Youtube video with the word “yoga” in the title, and mimic the movements of the person on the screen. (more…)
