Conversations with a Counselor: Stefanie M. Jordão

MHU’s blog series, Conversations with a Counselor, features the new counselors joining the Counseling Center this year! Throughout the term, MHU officers will be sitting down with the new counselors to discuss everything mental health, from personal anecdotes to tips and advice.

This week, counselor Stefanie M. Jordão, MA, sat down with Pulkit Nagpal ‘23 to talk about her incredible career, the communities she hopes to interact with at Dartmouth, tips on maintaining good mental health, and hopes moving forward. At Dartmouth, she provides counseling to undergraduate and graduate students, and has interests in client-centered and trauma-informed counseling services, crisis services, and outreach programming, specifically focusing on suicide prevention, first-gen students, international students, and undocumented students. Reflections on the 15-Day Wellness Challenge

Last week, we wrapped up MHU’s first 15-day wellness challenge, which was held from February 1 to 15. Given the intense nature of Dartmouth terms, our goal was to motivate students to take care of their physical and mental well-being by taking time to do something small for themselves every day, from going outside and making a self-care kit to being creative and sleeping. In addition, we centered our challenge around building community in our own “Challenge GroupMe” to foster connections and peer encouragement during this virtual time. (more…)

This week, counselor Renata Surette, MS, sat down with Brian Kim ‘23 to talk about her incredible career, the communities she hopes to interact with at Dartmouth, and tips on maintaining good mental health. At Dartmouth, she provides counseling to undergraduate and graduate students, and has interests in traumatic stress, sleep, substance use, and disaster mental health.

Lessons from Nastia Liukin

For those of you who aren’t gymnastics enthusiasts, Nastia Liukin is best known for being the all-around female champion in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Two years before that, she severely sprained her ankle. It required surgery and a long recovery period.

Due to her slender build and history of injuries, she was described as “fragile” by the USA Gymnastics team coordinator, who advised her against competing in the ultimate event: the individual all-around.
