About the Author:

Hi! My name is Erica Bermeo-Matute. I am a first-year student at Dartmouth College. I am a first-generation, low-income student.

I am currently taking a Writing 2-3 class called Words as Worlds with Professor Monroe. Throughout our two terms, we have learned to question perspectives and ideas in society forcing us to delve deeper into the topics and uncover the often hidden and ignored perspectives of marginalized groups. Throughout taking this class, I was able to improve as a writer and continuously question the world around me.

I am from New York City. I grew up in Harlem, NY my whole life. I am the youngest child of two; my sister is 20 years old. Born to Ecuadorian immigrant parents, I became very attached to my Latino roots and interested on issues of immigration. I attended and graduated from Democracy Prep Charter High School. After high school, I wanted to continue learning. I am undecided on my major, but I am interested in Latino American Studies, immigration law, or following the pre-health track. I hope to help people in my community and make change in the world.

My hobbies include spending time with my family, hanging out with my friends, playing soccer, learning new sports, traveling, and listening to music. I also really like to read books and occasionally write my own stories.
