During the fall of my junior year of college, I worked as an editorial intern for Bronze, a lifestyle magazine that centers and uplifts women of color. Within this role, I wrote opinion pieces targeted at minority women that analyzed pop culture and entertainment. My responsibilities included developing pitches, conducting research in support of my articles, fact-checking, and integrating multiple rounds of feedback into my work.

This position was particularly meaningful to me, in part because creating my own content and receiving detailed feedback helped me develop my voice as a writer. I also learned how to tailor my writing to appeal to my target audience, make clear arguments with a limited word count, and engage in original, nuanced analysis of cultural phenomena. Please see below some of my most-read pieces for Bronze:

‘There She Is’: Women of Color Win Big in Miss America 2019 – “What does it mean for women of color to win four of the top five spots in a competition that has helped define traditional beauty standards and “ideal” feminine traits?”

What I’ve Learned from Meghan Markle’s Feminism – “Protocol prevents Markle from making political statements in public, requiring her to divorce politics from a movement that claims “the personal is political.” I’m not surprised, in this context, that Markle’s feminist statements have been careful and restrained. I didn’t expect that her actions would feel more powerful for being so quiet.”

A Tribute to Crazy Rich Asians’ Rachel Chu – “Rachel is unafraid to display traits that are associated with Asians. She refuses to hide her intelligence, breezing through complex ideas about psychology and expecting her students to keep up. She is visibly passionate about her field and refuses to dull her competitive fire. Rachel doesn’t make any effort to avoid stereotypes, and she has found someone who loves her exactly as she is.”

The Power of Jameela Jamil’s Life Positivity Campaign – “Jamil bluntly acknowledges how degrading our beauty standards are to women, making life positivity feel more empowering than many similar initiatives I’ve come across.”
