About Me

Hello! My name is Uma, and I’m an undergraduate student at Dartmouth College. I’m passionate about supporting and defending the rights of underserved communities, and I believe communication is a powerful tool for achieving social change. The most formative experience of my life was the year I spent serving as a full-time tutor and mentor to at-risk third graders through City Year. My work led me to become passionate about public health, as I learned about the many community-level factors that made it so much harder for my students to stay healthy.

At Dartmouth, I designed a major combining Sociology with African and African American Studies, allowing me to study inequality in an interdisciplinary way. I also founded Health Access For All, a student group that raises money for nonprofits fighting health disparities in the United States. Through work-study positions and internships, I took on roles related to communication and outreach, including freelance writing, marketing, and video production. For example, I wrote articles analyzing pop culture for a magazine geared towards women of color and used Adobe Premiere to edit videos showcasing experiential learning at Dartmouth.

I hope to pursue a career at the intersection of public health and communications. I love finding innovative, compelling ways of presenting information to others, and I seek to leverage that skill to make an impact for marginalized people. Knowledge can inspire individuals to action, help people in need access vital resources, and dispel harmful myths. In other words, equipping people with information can change the world, and I want to be a part of that.
