Michael E. Choukas

  • Graduated from Dartmouth College in 1927 and received a masters and doctorate from Columbia University in sociology. He began teaching at Dartmouth shortly thereafter (1929).
  • Born in Greece, and came to America when he was 16. Conducted some research in Greece prior to starting his professorship.
  • Expert in propaganda studies. Created and taught the course “Public Opinion and Propaganda,” one of the first on the subject in the nation.

He invented a course in propaganda in the 1930s, which was really cutting-edge in this country and in fact he became a very prominent and…  one of the more knowledgeable people on propaganda. Everything that he taught was really cutting-edge. –Michael Choukas Jr. D ’51 (Son)

  • Authored two books, Black Angels of Athos (1934), and Propaganda Comes of Age (1965).¹
  • Called to serve by the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (precursor to the CIA) during the end of World War II (therefore took a leave of absence of three years from the department). 
  • Shortly after returning, served as chairman to the sociology department before moving back to Greece.
