Erville B. Woods

  • Rapidly expanded the sociology department during his tenure at the College.
  • Took over for Professor Wells.
  • Produced and reviewed many papers/articles. Below is a quotation from his article titled “The Social Waste of Unguided Personal Ability” found in the American Journal of Sociology (1913):

Ability receives its reward only when it is presented with the opportunities of a fairly favorable environment, its peculiarly indispensable sort of environment. Naval commanders are not likely to be developed in the Transvaal, nor literary men and artists in the soft coal fields of western Pennsylvania. For ten men who succeed as investigators, inventors, or diplomatists, there may be and probably are in some communities fifty more who would succeed better under the same circumstance (359).¹

  • Modeled what is needed in Introductory Sociology in his article titled “The Teaching and Content of Introductory Sociology” citing that (1) all professors in the department should have a “finger in the pie” in terms of developing the Intro. course, (2) a variety of different teaching methods (“Lectures, informal discussions, projects and field problems” 321) should be utilized, (3) a variety of writers should be introduced throughout the term, among other classroom tips.²
  • Served as the advisor to the Theta Chi Fraternity, Alpha Theta Chapter in 1920.³
