Robert ‘Bob’ Sokol

  • Graduated Columbia University with a Ph.D. in sociology.¹
  • Objected World War II, yet served two years in Civilian Public Service work camps throughout the U.S.¹
  • Began teaching at Dartmouth in 1961, and remained at Dartmouth for over 50 years.¹

Professor Sokol had learned the names of everyone in our entry level sociology course by the second class meeting. He went out of his way to understand who we were, where we were from, what prompted us to take the class. Professor Sokol used humor, wit, and sarcasm to keep us engaged. He called on us when our hands were not raised, making sure we were part of the discussion and more importantly, that we were wrestling with the ideas presented and stepping out of our comfort zones. -Susan Kelly D’81 (Former Student)²

  • Taught courses in social stratification and regarding marriage/the family.¹
  • Was a social activist all his life, including an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and their admission to Dartmouth College.
