Hello and welcome to my ePortfolio for LACS 20!
This website chronicles my learning in the class “The Politics and Ethics of Development in Latin America.” In December I will be heading to Nicaragua with the Dartmouth Cross-Cultural Education and Services Program (CCESP) on the community development team. Global service learning (voluntourism?) poses many logistical, ethical, and political challenges. Does the import of unskilled volunteers into developing nations help or harm?Is it possible to support lasting change over the course of a few weeks? What do sustainable development and global health programs look like? Does global service learning perpetuate colonial power dynamics? Considering the history of the United States’ intervention in Nicaragua, what is my responsibility as an American? Make up for past wrongs through service? Stay out of Nicaragua and stop interfering? Throughout the semester and during my service trip to Nicaragua I will be exploring these difficult questions. Although there are no definite conclusions to these controversies, I hope to reach a greater understanding of development and its consequences.

Este sitio web registra mi conocimiento en la clase “Las políticas y éticas de desarrollo en América Latina.” En diciembre yo voy a viajar a Nicaragua en el programa de servicio y educación transcultural de la universidad Dartmouth con el equipo de desarrollo comunitario. Aprendizaje en servicio global (¿turismo voluntario?) propone muchos desafíos logísticos, éticos, y políticos. ¿La importación de trabajadores no especializados ayuda o hace daño? ¿Es posible apoyar cambio duradero durante escasas semanas? ¿Qué se parecen programas sostenibles de desarrollo y salud global? ¿En vista de la intervención histórica de los Estados Unidos en Nicaragua, qué es mi responsabilidad como una norteamericana? ¿Compensar para errores pasados a través del servicio? ¿Quedarse afuera de Nicaragua y no intervenir? A lo largo del semestre y mi viaje de servicio a Nicaragua, voy a explorar estas preguntas difíciles. Aunque no hay una conclusión definida a estas polémicas, yo deseo realizar un entendimiento más profundo sobre desarrollo y sus consecuencias.
