Early Life:

Samuel Jenkins was born on March 23rd, 1896 to Otho and Elizabeth Jenkins, growing up right outside of New York City in Englewood, New Jersey. Samuel’s father was a coachman and laborer, which were jobs that represented a working to middle class income. Although Samuel grew up in a remarkably average African American home, through the determination of his family and himself, he earned an amazing opportunity to change his future and attend Dartmouth College.

During his sophomore year, Jenkins joined the Cross Country team and finished a season high 28th at the National Intercollegiate Championships in New York.After his Sophomore year, Jenkins left Dartmouth for a year and joined the Allied war effort of WWI. Jenkins received 15 credits for his service and graduated 66th out of 123 in his class as a History Major.

After a few years pursuing a teaching career,  Samuel returned to New York with the and hoped to become a Pediatrician in 1924.  In 1928 Jenkins received his M.D. and his license to practice medicine at New York University. He later founded the Queen’s Clinical Society, the Harlem branch of American Red Cross, and the Brooklyn Medical and Dental Society and joined the Medical Board of Harlem and Sydenham Hospitals, the American Board of Pediatrics, and the New York County Medical Society. In 1942 he was selected to be medical the consultant in the Bureau of Social Hygiene under federal supervision. Jenkins eventually died in 1987
