Leo Granger ’16

Before Dartmouth:

Leo Yearwood Granger was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma, September 28, 1894, one of six sons of Dr. William Richard Randolph and Mary T. Granger. He grew up in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Newport News, Virginia, and Newark, New Jersey, as his parents were continually moving their family away from areas governed by Jim Crow. Leo graduated from Barringer High School in Newark where he excelled in academics as well as athletics. All six Granger boys graduated from Ivy League Institutions in the early 20th century. Four of the Grangers graduated from Dartmouth College, William ’15, Leo ’16, Lester ’18, and Lloyd ’20 while the other two finished at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Dartmouth Career:

Once at Dartmouth, Leo participated on the freshman cross country running team and lettered in varsity cross country his sophomore year. He stopped running competitively after his sophomore year and pursued his studies to become a doctor.

After Dartmouth:

After graduating from Dartmouth in 1916 Leo continued his education at Columbia Physicians and Surgeons School and graduated in 1918. Five of the six Granger brothers would end up studying medicine–inspired by their father Dr. William “Ran’ Granger who was one of the first prominent black doctors in Newport News, Virginia in the 1890s. Tragically, Leo Granger died of pneumonia in 1930 and left a wife and son, Leo Yearwood Jr.
