What this experience means to me (Lo que significa está experiencia para mi)

Hi everyone! Thanks for visiting my site! My name is Dominique Dadekian, but everyone just calls me Dom. I am so grateful for the opportunity that I have had to learn so much about Nicaraguan history, politics, culture, education, health, and the environment this term. I am also so glad that we spent so much time discussing the true meaning and value of service projects (and their potential pitfalls) during the course of this class, since the one international trip I have taken, to Costa Rica, had a community service component to it that left me a bit confused about what we, as Americans, could really do for people in the rural parts of developing countries. Needless to say, I came home from that trip feeling like I had a wonderful time, but that I had not really helped anybody as much as I could have. Even though it was nice to come home and say “I went to Costa Rica and did community service,” did it really mean anything? Learning about the wonderful work of thoughtful non-governmental organizations like Bridges to Community has opened my eyes to the amount of good we can do for others as long as we approach the situation correctly. The amount of thought and planning that has gone into making this trip beneficial for both myself and my peers, and the local Nicaraguans that we will meet and work with on our CCESP trip has been inspiring to me, and I cannot wait to finally get there and meet everyone!

¡Hola todos! ¡Muchas gracias por visitar mi sitio! Me llamo Dominique Dadekian, pero todo el mundo simplemente me llama Dom. Estoy muy agradecida por la oportunidad que he tenido aprender tanto sobre la historia, la política, la cultura, la educación, la salud, y el medio ambiente nicaragüense este trimestre. También estoy tan feliz que pasamos tanto tiempo en discutir la significado verdadera y el valor de los proyectos de servicio (y sus problemas potenciales) durante el curso esta clase, porque el único viaje internacional que he tomado, cual fue a Costa Rica, tenia un componente de servicio que me dejó un poco confundida sobre lo que nosotros, como americanos,en realidad podríamos hacer para las personas en las partes rurales de países subdesarrollados. Innecesario decir, vine a casa de ese viaje sintiendo que he tenido un buen tiempo, pero que en realidad yo no ayudaba a ninguna persona tanto que podría. Aunque era bueno venir a casa y decir, “Fui a Costa Rica y trabajé como voluntario,” ¿tiene algo significado en realidad? Aprender sobre el buen trabajo de unos reflexivos organizaciones no gubernamentales (ONGs) como Puentes a la Comunidad ha abierto mis ojos a la cantidad de bien que podemos hacer para los demás si usamos la estrategia correcta. ¡La cantidad de pensamiento y planificación que hemos sido para asegurar que este viaje tiene beneficios para mis pares y yo, y los nicaragüenses locales que vamos a conocer y trabajar con en nuestro CCESP ha sido algo muy inspirador para mi, y no puedo esperar para finalmente llegar allí y conocer a todos nuestros anfitriones!

A Bit About Me (Un Poco Sobre Yo)

I grew up in Merrimack, NH and I am currently a sophomore at Dartmouth College. I am on the pre-medical track and hope to go to medical school after graduating. As of right now, I am majoring in Biology, but I am not your typical pre-med Biology major, as my primary area of interest in Biology is in environmental sciences and ecology. I am hoping to enroll in the Biology Department’s foreign study program, where I will have the chance to travel back to Costa Rica to study ecology in various different ecosystems around the country.

Yo crecía en Merrimack, NH y ahora soy en mi segundo año en Dartmouth College. Estoy en el sendero pre-medicina y espero ir a la facultad de medicina después de graduarme. En este momento, yo soy un estudiante de Biología, pero no soy su estudiante de Biología típico que está interesada en la medicina, porque mi primaria área de interés en la Biología está en los ciencias del medio ambiente y la ecología. Espero inscribirme en la programa de estudios extranjeros del departamento de Biología, con que voy a tener la oportunidad de viajar a Costa Rica otra vez y estudiar la ecología en varios ecosistemas diferentes en el país.

I am also incredibly passionate about education, and I have spent a great deal of time volunteering for a local charter school through Students for Education Reform at Dartmouth. I have also taught biology at a summer program for middle school students called Breakthrough. Because of my strong interest in education and closing the opportunity gap for students of lower socioeconomic class, I am considering an education minor, as well.

También, soy muy apasionada sobre la educación, y he pasado mucho tiempo trabajando como voluntario para una escuela “fletado” local a través de Estudiantes para Reforma de la Educación a Dartmouth. También he enseñado la biología en una programa que se llama Breakthrough que es una programa de verano para estudiantes de grados 7 a 9. A causa de mi interés fuerte en la educación y en cerrar el hueco de oportunidad para estudiantes de clases socioeconómicos más bajos, estoy considerando estudiar la educación aquí, también.

Although I am unsure as to whether I will continue to study Spanish formally, I have studied Spanish throughout high school and have taken two Spanish classes at Dartmouth. I am excited to have the opportunity to practice my conversational Spanish in Nicaragua, and I do hope to keep up my skills with my language even if I do not choose to continue taking Spanish classes.

Aunque no estoy segura si voy a continuar estudiando el español formalmente, he estudiado la lengua a lo largo de la secundaria y he tomado dos clases en el departamento de español aquí en Dartmouth. Estoy entusiasmada para tener la oportunidad de practicar mi español en las conversaciones en Nicaragua, y espero mantener mis habilidades de hablar en español no importa si continuo estudiando en las clases o no.

On campus, I am an Undergraduate Advisor (UGA) in a freshmen residence hall. I also tutor Spanish. In my free time, I love to do basically anything outside, whether that be going to the beach in the summer, hiking in the fall, or snowboarding in the winter. I’m always excited to go on an adventure as long as it is with awesome people!

En campus, soy una consejera carrera en un dormitorio para los estudiantes del primer año. También, soy tutora de español. En mi tiempo libre, me encanta hacer básicamente alguna cosa en el aire libre, si lo es ir a la playa en el verano, dar unos paseos por las montañas en el otoño, o hacer snowboard en el invierno. ¡Siempre estoy entusiasmada para ir en una aventura si es con personas increíbles!
