“A Sense of Community”: Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Students & the Growth of Social Alternatives at Dartmouth College

For my Historical Accountability Student Research Fellowship this spring, I was interested in researching the beginning of the first visible LGBTQ community at Dartmouth. But I discovered that there was no simple – or linear – way to encapsulate the changes that were happening on Dartmouth’s campus that made this community possible, and I could not extract them from the story.

I have done my best to put together a main narrative, and I also have included links to pages with supplementary information about several of the topics and organizations that I hope will give a more accurate impression of the way social alternatives grew at Dartmouth beginning in the late 1970s.
