Modern Black American Literature

I took this class with Dr. Joshua Bennett during my remote Sophomore fall term, which was anything but normal. I took this class amidst our country’s intense political climate during a taxing election cycle. I took this class during a year with resurgences of the Black Lives Matter movement in light of continuous institutionalized racism, heinous acts of police brutality, and prejudice. I’ve learned how far we’ve come, and how much our country needs to grow. I’ve learned the value of looking to the past for solutions of the future. It may seem like in the year of 2020, we are living through a very unique time. It’s true. But Angela Davis and George Jackson were living through unprecedented times at the height of the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties. As was W.E.B. DuBois when he fought so eloquently against lingering issues of brutal racism and slavery in the U.S. Maybe our time is no different. And perhaps we can look back at how our predecessors dismantled slavery to inspect how we can remove the chains from the world in which we currently live.
