Writing Journal 5: Final Reflections

At the start of the term, I was truthfully daunted by the task of writing a 10+ page research paper for the class. I was unsure of my ability to explore a specific topic so thoroughly. However, I was pleasantly surprised about the research paper process. I ended up really enjoyed doing the research and writing the paper. I think this had to do with two things, one being that I really enjoyed my paper topic (Frida Kahlo) and could easily identify the relevance my topic had in modern culture. The second thing that made writing my research paper a lot more enjoyable was spacing out the work. I spent an entire week gathering sources and when I eventually sat down to write the paper I found my familiarity with the topic made the words flow onto the page.

Beyond this paper, I have really enjoyed the opportunity this class granted me to explore a topic I would not otherwise be familiar with. It is easy to see from the multitude of t-shirts with Frida’s face on it to the explosion of mural projects across the country that the topics we discuss in this class are still very much relevant, and I am thankful for the historical background and context this class granted me. Beyond that, I am thankful for the opportunity to get to know Professor Moody and my fellow classmates. I always enjoy hearing different people’s new and interesting perspectives and I feel like this class facilitated informative and insightful discussions. Thank you to all for an amazing term!

Writing Journal Post 4: Oral Presentations

I found the oral presentations very helpful and informative. It was interesting to not only hear about other people’s topics, but also see what they were doing with their site. Some people’s sites really blew me away, and you could tell they really had an eye for website design. Jamie’s website for example really inspired me, and it made me want to go back and edit my homepage so that it really caught the viewer at first glance.

I also learned a lot of valuable tricks to make my website easier to navigate and  look cleaner. For example, Brandon taught us how to in bed the pictures within the essay posts so the reader could easily reference the piece of art being analyzed in the particular paragraph. I also really liked the way Natalee’s home page had a repeating image of Frida in the background, and she helped me get that for my front page as well.

It was overall very interesting to hear the vast array of other topics, and see what particular interests my classmates. I could definitely see a lot of passion behind some people’s topics and I’m looking forward to seeing and reeding the final versions.

Writing Journal Post 3: First Draft of the Research Paper

I struggled condensing all the information I got from my sources into my first draft of my research paper. The thing I initial struggled with the most was coming up with a concise thesis from which to organize the rest of my paper. Ultimately I came up with a broad thesis that I plan on editing as I continue towards my final draft of my paper. Initial, I just started writing different tangential paragraphs about different topics that intrigued me about Frida and went back in and added transitions to make the paper flow. I a lot of paragraphs centered around ideas that were briefly mentioned in one of my sources. I would then do further research to really flesh out the point I was trying to make. I was really intrigued about Frida’s influence in modern day (considering the recent historic Women’s March) so I really wanted to contextualize Frida’s influence in modern society. When including analysis of different pieces of Frida’s art in my paper, I started out by finding analysis from a respected art historian using their analysis as a starting point. I then tried to look at the painting on my own and include my own unique analysis. I feel really good about having a full draft and I feel ready to go back in and fine tune my transitions and grammer. The editing process will hopefully include peer editing and maybe a visit to RWIT.
