Blog Discussion 3: About Nicaragua

For my About Nicaragua project, I have chosen to research the topic of ethnic exclusion within Nicaragua. In Nicaragua, there are six ethnic groups. They are the Garifuna, the Mestizo, the Miskito, the Mayangna, the Creoles, and the Rama. Nicaragua is not without its racism and discrimination and subsequently, I am curious to see how these groups interact with each other especially in regards to issues such as healthcare and land ownership. Through the analysis of ethnic exclusion in Nicaragua, I will be able to better understand how it occurs in Haiti. What I know of racism and discrimination in Haiti, I know from stories my grandparents and parents would tell me. It is my hopes that through my research I will be able to understand the foundations and consequences of ethnic exclusion and how it affects different ethnic groups.

Assignment 3: Acquaintance Essay

For this essay, I had to interview and then write an essay about one of my peers. I met Julia Mallone in class and then we set up a day to ask each other questions. The hardest part about writing this essay was synthesizing everything everything together in a cohesive manner. I had bits and pieces of Julia’s life and then I had to put it all together in a way that showed who Julia is from my perspective.
