About the Author

I'm 19 years of age and was born in Miami, Florida. I have a sister in High School. My interests include politics, economics, international development, and public health. I enjoy mountain biking, watching movies, and love reading a good book. Perhaps, one of my closest connections to this class is my Hispanic background.  My first language was Spanish.  I speak Spanish at home with my parents and grandparents, who are of Cuban descent. I am from the city of Miami, which has a large Latino/Hispanic influence, this includes many Cubans and Nicaraguans.  One can be found casually speaking Spanish with almost anyone in the city, as it is the language of choice for a significant part of the population.

I chose this class for a variety of reasons. To begin with, I thought it would be interesting to learn more about the process of development.  Primarily, however I took this class because of my previous experience with Nicaragua.  I was able to travel to Nicaragua last winter interim with a couple of friends from Dartmouth. We stayed a night in Managua and then took a bus to Jinotega. In Jinotega we volunteered for AVODEC, an organization that helps maintain the well-being of the community and its surrounding areas. This experience opened my eyes to the lack of sanitation and resources in certain areas of Nicaragua. I am excited to learn more about the history of Nicaragua, and about how different strategies could help Nicaragua progress. Below is a picture of me with some friends in Jinotega.

We will likely cover many aspects of Nicaraguan culture and life in this class, a subject I would love to delve into. Additionally, I'm majoring in economics, with a concentration in development. This course will hopefully place much of what I have learned in an economics setting into a hands-on case-study.

!Bienvenidos! Mi colegio esta localizado in New Hampshire, y tiene varios programas internacionales.
