Blog Discussion 1: Why the Nicaragua CCESP and why LACS 20?

Although I will not be able to participate in the Nicaragua CCESP, I am taking Latin American and Caribbean Studies 20 (LACS 20) with Professor Moody because I want to learn more about Nicaragua. When I think about Nicaragua, I think of my home country Haiti.

I believe that both countries have much in common and thus, if I can better understand Nicaraguan culture, I will be able to better understand my own home country of Haiti. Both countries have had a unique relationship with the United States and also have many inhabitants who are impoverished. This is the general theme that I get from the media. I want to understand more however. It’s easy to become susceptible to what the media portrays about many countries, but to truly understand, one must examine all aspects of the culture. It is my goal that by the end of the semester I will be able to say “Yes, I can accurately tell you about Nicaragua”.
