Why the class?

Why the Nicaragua CCESP and why LACS 20?

I will not be participating in the Nicaragua CCESP. However, I wish I were. The program sounds like and invaluable opportunity and its right up my alley of interests. If I had known about the program earlier I would have done it. I’m originally from Colombia and lived there for eleven years. Having been born in a developing nation, I was able to see many contrasts; for example in people’s living conditions. In the city of Medellin, where I come from, many have the ability to live in an adequate homes with resources like those enjoyed in the US. However, there are also thousands living in “shanty towns” made of cardboard and plastic sheets. These communities in Colombia benefit everyday from programs such as CCESP. Nicaragua is very much like Colombia in this aspect, which is why I truly appreciate these programs. Although, I won’t be going on the CCESP I hope to one day make this kind of work my profession

I’m taking this class because I believe this is a good step to reach my goal of doing this kind of work in the future. I’m particularly interested in learning the specifics of how countries such as Colombia and Nicaragua develop/can develop. I also expect to have fruitful interactions with the student/people from Nicaragua.

I expect this class will present the practical knowledge in regards to the development of countries. The do’s and the don’ts! Additionally, I expect that with the work of everyone participating we can learn to come up with solutions to problems we’ve never had in our lives.

As far as my studies at Dartmouth, I am currently on the pre-med track and hope to intersect this in the future with international aid organizations and NGOs.
