Translation: Theory and Practice

This was a wonderful course, part of my major in Comparative Literature, introducing students to translation as a creative and critical art. In my major I study French and German, and so as part of the class I tried my hand at translating various kinds of texts from and into both languages. Though translation is incredibly difficult, I found those exercises really fascinating, and a good way to practice my languages, even if the end result was nowhere near “accurate.”

For my final project, I translated nine French and German poems by Rainer Maria Rilke and wrote an essay about it. You can view that project here.
