Student Perspectives of the Top of the Hop

In order to truly determine whether the Top of the Hop fulfilled a third space need, separate from the functions of work and home, it only made sense to talk to the people who use the space and learn what they used it for. 35 students were surveyed about these very questions and below are notable results and trends.

  • Most students said they usually came to the Top of the Hop to study. They referenced the beautiful view, open atrium style of the room, and natural light as reasons to why they preferred to study here. Interestingly, a few people mentioned that they specifically liked to write their papers up here.
  • Another common use for the Top of the Hop that students mentioned was grabbing meals at the Courtyard Cafe, located downstairs in the Hopkins center, and coming upstairs to eat and enjoy the view.
  • 7 of the students surveyed practiced, performed, or took classes in the Hopkin’s Center. All of them said that they often came up to the Top of the Hop to work before or after their rehearsals. Some of them, who performed in student ensembles, also mentioned they had performed up here before and enjoyed the experience.
  • A few athletes specifically said the Top of the Hop was a nice place to relax but also get work done between classes and going to practices or lifts because it is closer to the athletic facilities than the library.
  • Two people mentioned that they had attended the career fair hosted up here in the fall.
  • One person attended Bill Clinton’s talk when he visited earlier during winter term.
