      Upstairs Foco

  1. Claim: Upstairs foco embodies Flemings’ perspective on publicity
  • Publicity encourages responsibility of actions and behaviors and responsibility encourages community
  • Upstairs foco thus provides a sense of community
  1.         Structure
  • a.          Describe the area physically how is the space different than the rest of foco?
  • b.         Describe the function of foco in general
  1.         Uses:
  • a.          Studying
  • b.         Eating
  • c.          Team Meetings
  • d.         Hanging out (TV)
  1.        Physical things that promote publicity
  • a.          TV’s
  • b.         Circle Tables
  • c.          Easily movable tables and chairs (tables are on wheels)
  • d.         Eyesight to downstairs foco and serving areas
  1.         Examining Question: How does that publicity cause people to act different?
  • a.          Do people have different mannerisms?
  • b.         Ask how often people go upstairs and what they do? What time are they most often to go upstairs?
  1.          Build contextual evidence off these descriptions:
  2.         The stairs leading to the opening of the upstairs are illuminated with natural light from the windows. The light allows the area to be more inviting encouraging open discussion in the relaxed atmosphere. Immediately, students feel they are entering a more comforting space as the carpet begins at the top of the staircase.
  3.         The first hall of upstairs foco is well lit and has many windows for natural light. The empty space between rows of table promotes an area for students to move freely and discuss. In addition, the various size tables offer students to dine dynamically, encouraging various size discussions and conversations.
  4. The picture demonstrates the unique artwork found on the walls of upstairs foco and the comfortable unique lounge chairs offered. In addition, the image illustrates the distinct differences between the modern, lounge atmosphere of upstairs foco and the older wooden beams of the traditional downstairs. While students dine and chat with others, upstairs foco is also a lot quieter enabling students to get their work done and study hard.
  5. Further from the entrance of upstairs foco, smaller round table crowd around a centralized TV to craft conversation amongst students in the upstairs space. The TV’s provide a tool that allows students to use the space in various ways—hanging out, eating, studying, etc.
  6. This panoramic shot of upstairs foco draws attention to the varied seating patterns and overall light presented opting many to choose studying here over the library because of its “relaxed vibes.” The space is used for individual activities but to also hold large sports teams, clubs, and other organization’s events and meeting. As part of a central location on campus, upstairs foco draws upon the bustle of the downstairs but stays secluded in its location.
