Project #3 The Video

The last and final project for this class focused on the creation of a PSA call to action video. As my issue was overtly political, I took inspiration from political ads from various politicians surrounding a particular issue. One video in particular I looked at was an anti-war Bernie Sanders ad from 2016 heavily featuring his vice presidential pick Tulsi Gabbard. My focus this time was on the current war in Afghanistan. The Afghanistan War has become relevant in the public sphere again after Donald Trump announced his future plans for military escalation there. Most of my video serves as a reminder about the costs and history of the Afghanistan War. I argue that we have been there too long while gaining too little at great cost in lives and resources. The end of my video is my call to action. I urged the members of my audience to contact their representatives and compel them to push for an end to the conflict in Afghanistan.

I did not restrict the demographics of my target audience for this project as I did my podcast and infographic. The Afghanistan War is highly unpopular, with a poll by CNN revealing that in 2013 only 17% of the public still supported our efforts there. For the public, the war in Afghanistan is not nearly as controversial as military spending and regime change in Syria. Thus, my goal for this video is to remind the audience that the Afghanistan War is still relevant and is an issue worth taking action on. The only restriction I had for my target audience was for members of my audience to be of voting age so their voice has tangible meaning to their state representatives.

The majority of my video is spent illustrating the futility of our involvement in Afghanistan and why it urgently needs to end. I took a more straightforward approach when making rhetorical and editing decisions. I decided that the straightforward and serious presentation of political campaign ads was the most appropriate approach to a video about war. Overall, I think I achieved my objective of creating a video that was persuasive in eliciting my call to action.
