Media Representations of Women

I mentioned this in my previous discussion post, but Miss Representation included many examples of women being objectified in the media— photoshopped women in magazines, advertisements, commercials, and video games wearing little to no clothing are idealized for the sake of profit. I appreciated that Miss Representation focused on how current media is influenced by the sexualization of women and how this has affected our society recently, as well as how this shapes the way girls view themselves as they grow up in our world today.

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, although released more recently than Miss Representation, takes us back to the earlier waves of feminism in US history. Through interviews and the narratives of several incredibly bold and influential women, we are able to see how the women’s liberation movement shed light on issues such as catcalling, unequal representation in workplaces, the stigma surrounding lesbianism, and ignorance concerning women’s bodies. I personally found it inspiring that many of the efforts to bring these issues to the attention of the media were not nationwide but rather small groups of women taking a stand in small ways.
