Masculinity at Dartmouth

I haven’t noticed very overt examples of masculinity at Dartmouth since coming, but I have noticed males, especially my Asian brothers here, to feel incredible amounts of pressure to succeed in their chosen careers. Obviously, their female counterparts feel the same way, but perhaps a slight influence over the males’ pressure is the idea of being the “man of the household”, an idea which is quite prevalent in Asian households and a term often used in my own. In certain cases, I have observed men objectifying women, albeit usually in a joking matter so I honestly wasn’t particularly offended. This I suppose is also a part of the problem as I’ve grown very desensitized to this and have accepted this as “men being men”, but on a larger scale, this can contribute to females’ pressure to adhere to the lofty standards of physical beauty.
