Cachet Elements

Several elements in the BVAC lobby are so striking in their design that they create an energy and presence that takes the place of conversation in this fourth space.

1. Lamps

Delicate white light is provided by chandelier-like lamps whose lights seem to be embedded in dozens of thin tentacle-like arms.

IMG_11311) These light fixtures are the place's aesthetic claim to fame among students, and provide a spectacle while also setting a tone for use. When one mentions the ground floor of the BVAC to students, the first thing they seem to remember about it is these lamps, which are captivating and quite stunning, especially at night.
2. Color

Another spectacular feature of the BVAC is the crimson red color theme. The long couches that make up the central seating area are a deep, bright red color. The walls of the one seating area with a table, situated in a small alcove, are also red.

  1. 1) The color red suggests seriousness and classical timelessness, feelings which facilitate thoughtful work.
IMG_11532) Red is known to be a powerful color eliciting a physical reaction, associated with strong feelings and stimulation of energy.(3) It's the opposite of the bare setting that characterizes so many "third spaces".
IMG_12493) The bold design choice draws attention to a few central features, attracting users primarily to these elements. It almost seems as if the color red should be linked to a key reading "sit here".
