Spring 2019

End of Term reflection: 3rd June 2019

The term has  been quite interesting. Like every other term here, it has had its share of good  and bad times. I had three interesting and engaging classes. First, software design and implementation (CS 50) introduced me to design thinking in the realm of software engineering, prompting me to adopt different perspectives about problem-solving. Through this course, I built a tiny search engine that was responsive to search queries and boolean logic, with ‘and’ & ‘or’, all in C programming language. Through my writing seminar, I learnt the importance of rhetoric and its application in pretty much any context that involves communication. I picked up rhetorical strategies that I integrated into my writing to boost its persuasive power, bearing in mind my audience and the overarching purpose of my writing. With a couple of readings in my seminar class, I also gained a fair idea of native american history and analysed the place and function of native american history within the current society. Furthermore, my education class, although challenging, offered me the opportunity to learn about the wonders of a reading brain, looking at the underlying neurological and behavioral systems comprising the development of reading, an unnatural ability. I pored over readings about dyslexic children and adults and what kinds of intervention could alleviate their reading difficulties. It’s rewarding looking back at the volume and quality of knowledge I’ve acquired after just ten weeks, although these weeks were pretty intense. In these final days before the close of the term, I have taken the time to thank all those that have shared in my nurturing, my classmates, my teachers, and my friends. Who would have thought I will be done with my first year of college already? It’s to the glory of God. Overall the first year has been a good ride, a type of ride that takes you through several bumps and valleys, but will equally and smoothly get you to your destination. Beginning this summer, I look forward to applying the skills and knowledge I’ve learnt in my internship in Ghana. I hope to back in the fall rejuvenated to do better.
