The history of Nicaragua is filled with revolution. But in the midst of the political struggle and fighting are writers and poets – people not typically associated to be insurgency leaders. Especially in recent history, Nicaragua’s strongest or most influential leaders have been writers and poets: Daniel Ortega, the current president and Sandinista leader, Ernesto and Fernando Cardinal, the Sandinista Ministers of Culture and (formerly) Education, respectively, and Pedro and Violeta Chamorro, a Revolutionary and former President, respectively. Upon learning about this, I wanted to understand why Nicaragua has become a land of poets, with a focus on a single poet to understand the relationship between poetry and political efforts in Nicaragua.
