What is design thinking, and why is it useful?

Teams of students in the Senior Design Challenge tackle projects using the methodology of design thinking. Design thinking is a creative strategy that focuses on putting the end-user at the forefront of problem-solving. By focusing on uncovering and understanding core user needs, human-centered design thinking leads to more meaningful and impactful solutions.

Versatile innovation.

In recent years, the innovative power of design thinking has been harnessed by tech companies, social enterprises, NGOs, and many other kinds of organizations, with impressive results. Solutions that can be created using this methodology may take the form of physical or digital products, services, or experiences.

A proven process for problem-solving.

Here is what the students will do over the course of the project:

  • Empathize: Conduct primary and secondary research to understand the unmet needs of a specific group of people.
  • Define: Synthesize their research findings to articulate a precise problem or opportunity.
  • Ideate: Brainstorm a diverse set of solution ideas, which may include new products, services, and experiences.
  • Prototype: Make their ideas tangible with quick, low-resolution mock-ups.
  • Test: Take their prototypes back to the people for whom they are designing, in order to get feedback and refine their ideas.
