This site is a culmination of my research and work in The Politics and Ethics of Development in Latin America: The
Nicaraguan Context. This course works directly with the Dartmouth Center for Service to prepare the students who will later go to Nicaragua as a part of their service program. The course focuses on teaching these students Nicaraguan history and culture, as well as discussing the effectiveness and ethics of these kinds of programs.

Este curso trabaja directamente con el Dartmouth Centro de Servicio para preparar a los estudiantes que luego van a ir a Nicaragua. El curso se enfoca en la historia y cultura de Nicaragua y también estudia si programas de servicio son útil y apropiado.]
I have not had an extensive amount of experience with service programs. In fact, the only other service trip I have been on was in 2014 to Malawi, Africa. My experiences in Malawi piqued my interest in the role of service, while also leaving me with questions regarding their usefulness and overall long term success. It is for these reasons that I have chosen to take this class and trip; in order to learn how I can make a real difference as a global citizen.

That being said, here is a little bit about myself:

I am currently a sophomore at Dartmouth College, where I am pursuing a major in the Engineering Sciences. I am also First Generation American; both my parents were born and raised in Mexico. I am the third of four children and like all my siblings I was born in Southern California. I grew up in California until high school. This is because due to the A Better Chance program-an organization that focuses on helping students of color and lower socio-economic backgrounds gain access to better educations/Institutions-I was able to attend a boarding school located in Sedona, Arizona.
[Soy un estudiante de Dartmouth College, donde estoy estudiando ingeniería. También soy un primer generación americano, mis padres nacieron y crecieron en México. Yo soy el tercer de cuatro niños y como mis hermanos y hermana, nací en el Sur de California. Crecí en California hasta mis trece años porque luego tuve la oportunidad de ir al colegio en Arizona. Esto fue posible de parte de la program A Better Chance- una organización que se enfoca en ayudar a estudiantes de color entrar a mejores escuelas.]
I spent my entire four years of high school here. The school is called Verde Valley School. It is a tiny school embedded in the red rock region of Arizona. It consists of about 100 students in total and approximately 20 faculty members. Although the student body is so small, it is extremely diverse drawing in students from around the world.

Solo tiene un poco mas de cien estudiantes y viente maestros/maestras. Aunque es tan chiquito, la escuela es extremadamente diverso, estudiantes vienen de todos partes del mundo.]
In a very literal sense this school raised me-because I was so young when I first got here it didn't so much as change my perspective on the world as much as it gave me one in the first place. It is the reason I love spending time in the outdoors, making art, and exposed me to the importance of service in the first place.

Porque estaba demasiado joven cuando empecé ahí, este colegio me presento con tantas nuevas experiencias y en esos cuatro años me dejo encontrar muchas cosas que me encanta hacer. Por ejemplo, es ahí donde me di cuenta que me gusta pasar mi tiempo en la naturaleza, hacer esculturas, y también es el lugar que me enseñó que tan importante es el servicio.]
At Dartmouth, I continue to do all of these things through my extracurricular activities such as being a part of the Dartmouth Mountaineering Club, working as a student assistant in the Ceramic Studio, and taking a part in this trip led by the Dartmouth Center for Service.
