Grotesque Bodies

My best piece for my Writing 5 was my analysis of the movie "Alien" (1979) in which I used Mikhail Bakhtin's definition of the grotesque as a frame of reference through which we could understand Alien. I found that in Alien, the eponymous monster represented Bakhtin's definition of the grotesque as a body that grew beyond itself and interacted with the world, and that this was a threat to the closed-body, individual image of the human. Ultimately, I argued, the alien in the movie demonstrated the risks of corporate exploitation of human labor. You can read the full work here.

I chose this as the best piece from my Writing 5 course because I thought my contextualization of both Alien and Bakhtin was really clear, and then after ever piece of evidence in Alien I had a really clear connection to Bakhtin. Sometimes I can struggle with summarizing evidence vs. attacking evidence as it relates to my thesis, but in this project I was helped by a clear organizational structure from which my analysis flowed easily.
