Hello! My name is Hana Nazir and I hail from the suburbs of Atlanta– though I was actually born in New York and spent much of my childhood in a small town in southern Georgia, allowing me to experience a range of drastically different environments.

Hola! Me llamo Hana, y soy de un barrio residencial en las afueras de Atlanta– pero nací en Nueva York y pasé mucha de mi niñez en un pueblo de Georgia del Sur, que me ha permitido experimentar una gama de ambientes diferentes.

At Dartmouth, I am double-majoring in Neuroscience and Spanish, and am involved with the Stonefence Review (as Editor-in-Chief), biochemistry research at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and Al-Nur. In addition, I serve as a mentor for the Women in Science and Link Up programs. I love to write poetry, explore Spanish language and culture, and read– some of my favorite writers are Jhumpa Lahiri, Kurt Vonnegut, and Isabel Allende.

En Dartmouth, estoy doble-especializando en las neurociencias y el español , y estoy involucrado con el Stonefence Review (como Editora), investigación de bioquímica en el hospital de Dartmouth-Hitchcock, y Al-Nur. Además, sirvo como mentor para el programa de Mujeres en Ciencias, y el programa de Link Up. Me encanta escribir poesía, explorar el idioma y la cultura española, y leer– algunos de mis escritores favoritos son Jhumpa Lahiri, Kurt Vonnegut, y Isabel Allende.

Here I am enthusiastically presenting my first year of research, with my partner. Aquí estoy presentado (con gran entusiasmo) el primer año de mi investigación científica, con mi socia.

Working with the team as the Clinical Health officer will provide an excellent opportunity for me to expand on my passion for community development and familiarity with medical settings and the Spanish language. I would love to physically immerse myself in a setting that requires urgent care by working tirelessly to develop and implement strategies for community and infrastructure-related improvement. Instead of learning about societal challenges from the comforts of my privileged environment, I want to be able to directly speak with the members of communities in Nicaragua and gain an accurate perception of the issues that need to be addressed, and receive their feedback after changes are implemented.

Trabajando con el grupo, como la oficial de salud clínica me dará una oportunidad excelente para expandirme en la pasión para el desarrollo de comunidad y conocimiento de ambientes médicos y el idioma español. Me encantaría sumergirme en un ambiente que requiere cuidado urgente por trabajar sin descanso para desarrollar e implementar estrategias que mejoran la comunidad y la infraestructura. En vez de aprender de desafíos de la sociedad desde las comodidades de mi entorno privilegiado, quiero hablar directamente con los miembros de comunidades en Nicaragua y obtener una percepción precisa de los asuntos que tienen que ser abordado, y recibir las reacciones después de los cambios son implementados.

Moreover, I hope that this trip awakens my understanding and reduces the sense ignorance that derives from living in a town as privileged and socioeconomically isolated as Hanover. I hope I am able to apply my skills and the knowledge obtained from the LACS 20 course to effectively introduce and promote long-lasting, sustainable improvements, and gain the opportunity to develop close connections with the local people and hear them voice their needs and opinions.

Es más, espero que el viaje mejore mi entendimiento y reduzca la ignorancia que viene de vivir en un pueblo tan privilegiado y aislado socioeconómicamente como Hanover. Espero que pueda aplicar mis habilidades y el conocimiento obtenido por el clase de LACS 20 para introducir, eficazmente y promover mejoras duraderas y sostenibles, y ganar la oportunidad de desarrollar relaciones significativas con la gente de Siuna y escucharlas expresar sus necesidades y opiniones.
