Freshmen fall, I took QSS 15: Introduction to Data Analysis, HUM 1: Discussion with the Classics, and BIOL 11: Evolutionary History of the Human Genome.
QSS 15 (Prof Herron) was a statistics course, one akin to the 10s in the Dartmouth catalog (such as SOCY 10, GOVT 10, etc.). One of the assignments that we had was to conduct an experiment and write a research paper on it. My fellow group member Angela Zhang and I decided to investigate the effects of wealth and in-group bias on peer perception at Dartmouth. Here is the final report, which was compiled and written in R.
HUM 1 (Prof Mladek) was the course I took in lieu of Writing 5, a mandatory course for Dartmouth freshmen. This term’s focus was on love (how apt!) and we read a myriad of works surrounding the discussion of what love is, looks like, and can be.
Here is one of the only “fictional” pieces I wrote, an experimental piece written from Gregor’s perspective based off of Metamorphosis by Kafka.
We also wrote three major essays. Here is the final essay that I wrote arguing on the nature of love as presented in Her and Plato’s Symposium.
BIOL 11 (Prof Peterson) did not have any written assignments.
EXTRACURRICULAR ENGAGEMENTS, OTHER
Aside from my coursework, I also wrote weekly for Dartmouth’s admissions office blog. Here is my personal author page.
I edited a piece for Dartmouth’s Apologia publication, which should be out in 20W and is a special alumni edition. Many thanks to Sara Holston ’17 for giving me the privilege to assist in creating her work!
I wrote an article for Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science centering around the literature available on nutrition, diets, and intermittent fasting, which comes out 20W.
I am a part of the Thought Project LLC on campus. In addition to attending discussions and dinners, I also led a discussion about the role of diversity in creating an ever-increasingly global community such as the United States. Here is the discussion outline.
During the fall term, I also danced on Ujima Dance Troupe, attended meetings at GlobeMed, Agape Christian Fellowship, Tucker Center’s Multi-Faith Conversations and Speed Stories, Kidney and Disease Screening Program, Christian Union, Nathan Smith Society, Taiwanese Student Association, and Dartmouth Mathematical Society, and volunteered with Dartmouth Perspectives, Memory Café, and the Dementia Directive.
Over winterim, I went to China with the Dandelion Project and taught English to students at Dandelion Middle School for two weeks.
