1994 Diversity report 1

Dartmouth’s Inclusivity and Diversity Initiatives

Throughout the history of Dartmouth, there have been numerous initiatives to increase its diversity and inclusivity at this institution. In 1968, the McLane Committee was formed to “review Dartmouth’s commitment to the objective of equal opportunities with a view both to strengthening existing programs and to developing in all sectors of the institution appropriate new initiatives” and created a Committee on Equal Opportunity. In 1994, the Committee on Community and Diversity at Dartmouth published its “Managing Diversity” report with recommendations to the college about how to decrease intolerance and increase diversity. More recently, President Hanlon released an action plan for Inclusive Excellence as part of Moving Dartmouth Forward. Yet, the fact that all these initiatives have the same recurring goals and objectives shows the lack of change since the 1960s. These working groups continually depend on the labor of students and faculty–many of whom are not representative of the overall student body–while the institution takes credit for their work.  Overall, these initiatives put up the front that the administration is trying to create positive change without actually doing anything. The institution constantly discusses the desire to increase diversity and inclusivity, but Dartmouth’s actions say otherwise.
