Support a Friend

Ways to support a friend or family member who has been sexually assaulted:

Listen without judgement. Ask the survivor how you can help before you do anything. It’s important they’re in control, and the best thing you can do is listen.

Don’t blame them. Make sure they know the assault wasn’t their fault. Support their decisions.

Tell them you believe them. Make sure they know you believe them and support them.

Talk to them about resources. Medical care is important, as well as the option for reporting.

Don’t pressure them to do what you think is best. It’s your job to support their decision, and they know what they need to do to feel safe. It’s their decision whether they want to seek medical care, report the assault, or reach out to other resources.

Maintain confidentiality.

Take care of yourself. Talk to someone if you’re feeling overwhelmed. You can reach out to WISE’s hotline (866-348-9473) or Dartmouth’s Counseling and Human Development (603-646-9442, after hours: 603-646-3333).
