Dartmouth Supplement 3: “I Wonder and Think” Poem

I wonder and think about a great deal of things,

From the power of songs, to creatures with wings,

But during high school summers when I worked at a zoo,

I realized that humans are animals worth studying too,

That my love for music wasn’t really that strange,

For humans can make sounds that do wondrous things,

Unlocking doors to our emotions and brains,

These respective feelings of triumph and pain,

Music can help to better know our species,

From difference in language to difference in speeches,

For there is a power in music of human connection,

That could lead one interested in research in many directions,

To better understand the why and the how,

Humans came to be the way we are now,

For connection can be established without using words,

Allowing those who can’t speak to finally be heard,

And for others to share their deepest emotions,

Will come from studying the sounds of whales in deep oceans,

Or birds in the trees, or a lemur family dispute,

All will lead in the exact same route,

Sounds influence behavior, music the same,

In a hotel lobby or a football game,

Our music influences what we think and what we do,

And applying music to STEM will uncover the clues,

As our music is universal and therefore the key,

To understanding the greatest power on Earth:

Our humanity
