Discussion #8 Ex Machina, Terminator 2 and He, She and It

I feel the movie Terminator 2 Judgment Day can be seen mainly as an action movie but there are parts in it where gender roles and characteristics are altered. For example, Sarah Conner is a strong woman who is very gung-ho and most of the time you see those traits in male characters in action films.  With that being said I feel that Sarah Conner has aspects to her which are present in the contemporary society today because she is very independent and driven. In terms of representing males in society I feel the terminator is your typical male in action films. Very muscular and protective he exemplifies the male superhero mold found in action films even though he is not human. As for John, he also represents the young eager and reckless male mold in our society and always seems to find trouble and get into mischief. Finally, technology today provides both positive and negative things in our society like for instance a negative would be the face to face communication between people has dwindled due to texting and other forms of instant messaging communications. On the other hand, technology has also aided us in manufacturing and the efficiency that things are completed, but that can also be seen as a negative due to the outsourcing of jobs. Surveillance is also something that can be both positive and negative due to the lack of privacy that people seem to have in today’s world, but it also helps out our military which help keep us safe from outside threats. All and all technology has its upsides and its downsides, but I personally feel that it provides more help to humanity than it does harm.
